Bethany Beyond the Jordan

About 10 km north of the Dead Sea, where the Wadi Al-Kharrar leads into the Jordan river: this has been identified as the place where John the Baptist lived and the prophet Elijah ascended into heaven. In the area, there are remains of churches and monasteries dating back to Byzantine times.

You can visit the site believed to be the spot where Jesus Christ has been baptized. Several excravations show how this region has been frequented by Christian pilgrims throughout the centuries.
Until today, many people get baptized here, on this historical spot! There is also a modern church to hold the cermonies.
